Pulmonary Rehabilitation

The purpose of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation program at Atrium Physical Therapy is to provide patients and physicians in the Las Cruces area with the Physical Therapy and education components of pulmonary rehabilitation, with goals to:

  • control and alleviate as much as possible the symptoms and complications of respiratory impairment
  • train patients to achieve their optimal capacity to carry out activities of daily living
  • decrease psychological symptoms such as anxiety or depression
  • improve quality of life
  • return the patient to gainful employment when possible
  • promote independence and self-reliance
  • increase tolerance to routine daily activities and exercise
  • reduce exacerbations and hospitalizations
  • establish a routine of exercise/activity as a means to maintain realized gains

Demonstrated outcomes of pulmonary rehabilitation

  • Reduced hospitalizations and use of medical resources
  • Improved quality of life
  • Reduced respiratory symptoms (e.g. dyspnea)
  • Improved psychosocial symptoms (e.g., reversal of anxiety and depressions and improved self-efficacy)
  • Increased exercise tolerance and performance
  • Enhanced ability to perform activities of daily living
  • Return to work for some patients
  • Increased knowledge about pulmonary disease and its management
  • Increased survival in some patients use of continuous oxygen in patients with severe hypoxemia
